How to start with the WhatsApp Business API in India: the steps in order

Starting on the WhatsApp Business API takes a few steps, and most delays come from doing them in the wrong order. This guide lists the steps in the order that works and points to the guide for each one, where the details come from Meta's own documentation.

1. Decide whether you need the API

The free WhatsApp Business app and the API are different. If you need several people on one number, campaigns to many customers or automation, you need the API. Read WhatsApp Business app vs the API first.

2. Get your business verified

Meta checks the business behind the number. Verification takes documents and some days, so start it early. See business verification.

3. Choose the display name

The name customers see is approved by Meta. See the display name guide before you pick one.

4. Connect your number in VartaAPI

Sign up for the 7-day free trial, then connect your own number through Meta's sign-up window inside the app. The number stays on your own Meta account.

5. Write your first templates

Messages you send first, outside a customer's reply window, must use a template that Meta approves. The app has a template builder and 103 ready-made templates, including Indian festival offers, written to pass review.

6. Collect opt-in before you send

Meta requires permission before you message someone. See the opt-in rules.

7. Send a small first campaign

Send to a short list first and read the per-recipient report: who received it, who read it, who replied and who failed, and why.
